    Solar Landfill Provides a Shining Example

    There are more than 100,000 closed landfills in the U.S. providing thousands of acres of property that could be used for renewable energy development. Atlanta’s Hickory Ridge landfill that was once a pile of waste has been given 10 acres of solar panels to provide more use to the property.

Republic Services has worked hard through the challenges and has found solutions to staying safe with employee engagement, compliance and commitment. Solid waste workers have the seventh-highest mortality rate among all industries due to incidents involving heavy machinery used in management and processing waste, both inside facilities and while out on the road. However, the waste and recycling industry has put forth many efforts in the past several years to improve its safety performance.

One of the biggest complaints that Coyle receives from customers is, “Why aren’t you expanding the recycling?” and Republic is trying to address this issue.
